Penis size is a common body concern among men. While most guys report being satisfied with the size of their genitals, a sizable minority say they’re unhappy. For example, in a survey of 4,198 US men aged 18-65 who were asked to rate their satisfaction with 14 different aspects of their manhood , 85.9% were categorized as being satisfied overall. The remaining 14.1% (or about 1 in 7 men) were dissatisfied. Perhaps not surprisingly, their most common concerns revolved around flaccid and erect penis length as well as penile girth.Read More
I’m answering more of YOUR questions about sex today. In the video below, I’ll review ten questions submitted by readers of Sex and Psychology and explore what science can tell us about each one. As in previous videos, these questions cover a very diverse range of topics, from how long people tend to spend on sex to the effectiveness of the “pull-out” method to how many people have shaved their pubic hair. The specific questions are listed below. Check out the video for the answers!Read More
Some men’s penises seem to grow more than others when they change from a flaccid to erect state. In colloquial terms, men who experience a larger increase in length are often referred to as “growers”; by contrast, those who have a smaller length increase are often referred to as “showers.”
So what is the typical change in penis length from flaccid to erect—and just how many men fall into the category of grower versus shower anyway? A recent study published in the International Journal of Impotence Research offers some insight.Read More
The question of whether there are racial differences in penis size is one that has been notoriously difficult to answer with any degree of scientific certainty. The problem has been that studies of penis size are usually fraught with problems. For one thing, there’s the question of who’s doing the measuring—the participant himself or a trained researcher? The concern, of course, is that guys will be generous when measuring themselves and/or will perform the measurements inconsistently. Then there’s the issue of participant selection effects—are men of a larger size more inclined to participate in such studies? In short (no pun intended), there’s reason to be cautious about drawing sweeping conclusions from the research in this area.
That said, recent studies support the idea that race-based differences in penis size may exist.Read More
Two people can have sex fantasies about the same activity, but the way that specific activity plays out isn’t necessarily going to be the same from one person to the next. In fact, it might be very, very different. For example, if two people who had sexual fantasies about threesomes described those fantasies to you in detail, it’s quite possible that they might bear little resemblance to one another beyond the number of participants involved. One individual, for example, might describe wanting to be the center of attention and engaging in sex with two people they know extremely well; by contrast, another individual might desire a threesome with two strangers in which everyone participates equally.
What accounts for such great variability in fantasy content? I think it’s a reflection of our tendency to construct sexual fantasies that meet our unique psychological needs. A new study I published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior (co-authored by Dr. David Ley and sex advice columnist Dan Savage) supports this idea.Read More
The penis is a fascinating piece of human anatomy; however, it turns out that most of us don't actually know all that much about it. So, in the video below, I've compiled a list of seven of the most interesting facts about the penis--all tastefully displayed against the backdrop of some very phallic-looking fruits and vegetables. Because why not?Read More
As you might imagine, in my work as a sex educator, questions about penises--and especially about penis size--come up all the time. As such, I thought it might be helpful to put together a resource guide that addresses some of the most commonly asked questions on this topic. So, here are my answers to the five most popular questions I've encountered about penis size.
1.) “What is the average penis size?”Read More
The number of men seeking to enhance the size of their penises is on the rise, with guys lining up to buy everything from pills to pumps to stretching devices to fat injections, all designed to give them extra inches in length and/or girth. My guess is that most of you reading this probably already knew that; however, what you might not have known is that men's interest in genital enhancement actually goes well beyond the penis. In fact, some guys are seeking procedures designed to change the appearance of their scrotums, too--for instance, by making them bigger or less wrinkly.Read More
A reader submitted the following question:
“I wonder, does the penis get any smaller with age? In other words, does the penis shrink as men get older?”
Thanks for this great question! If you try searching Google for the answer, you’ll quickly come across lots of articles saying that this does indeed occur—however, none of those articles actually cite any research to back up their claims. Instead, they rely on the opinions of physicians and other medical experts. That's all well and good, but I always like to have data. So, I did some digging.Read More
A reader submitted the following question:
“Is it true that gay men have bigger penises than straight men?”
While some research suggests that there might indeed be some truth to this idea, the findings warrant a hefty dose of caution. Here why:Read More
You may be surprised to learn that Botox—a drug most famous for it’s ability to reduce facial wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing specific muscles—has a number of potential sexual applications. For instance, it has been used to treat vaginismus and it is currently being studied as a treatment for premature ejaculation (learn more here).
But that’s not all—some doctors have also studied Botox as a potential penis enlargement treatment. Yep, you read that right.Read More
Many guys have body image issues and, more often than not, those issues center around penis size--even among men who are perfectly normal in size to begin with. As a result, great demand has developed for techniques and treatments that can enhance penis size, culminating in the emergence of a multi-million dollar penile augmentation industry. There are now numerous 'male enhancement' products on the market, but the one question a lot of guys are asking is this: do any of them actually work?Read More
Many sex researchers have surveyed heterosexual women about their preferences when it comes to penis size. Curiously, though, most of the studies out there have only focused on one dimension of penis size: length. So what do women think about penile circumference, perhaps known more commonly as "girth?" And is one of these two dimensions more important than the other?Read More
A reader submitted the following question:
"How deep is a typical vagina? I hear a lot about penis size, but what about vagina size? Does size vary across nations?"
Thanks for these great questions! You're absolutely right that vaginal size is a topic that hasn't been discussed or researched nearly as often as penis size; however, there is some data out there that can speak to your questions.Read More
A lot of guys are worried that they aren't quite big enough when it comes to their penises. As a result, an increasing number of men are turning to pills, creams, pumps, and (sometimes) expensive surgeries in an attempt to increase their size, despite a lack of scientific evidence that any of these products and procedures are safe or effective. At least for straight guys, a lot of this penis anxiety is driven by the perception that women are supposedly clamoring for large penises, or that large penises bring women more pleasure. So what's the deal here? Is all of this obsession that men have about their size really warranted?Read More
The penis tends to be the most common part of the body that men are dissatisfied with and wish they could change. Consider this: one online survey of over 25,000 men found that nearly half of the participants were unhappy with their current size, with 45% wanting to be larger and 0.2% wanting to be smaller . Thus, among those guys who aren’t happy with their penises, there is almost a universal desire to be bigger. However, when looking at the actual penile measurements of guys who think that they aren’t big enough, very few of them have objectively small penises—the vast majority fall well within the normal range . In other words, almost all of the guys who think that they’re too small are actually perfectly normal.Read More
A recent paper published in the British Journal of Urology International reports results from the first systematic review of all penis size studies to date in order to provide a comprehensive look at typical penile dimensions. In total, they reviewed 20 different studies that, combined, included measurements of 15,521 penises from around the world. To be eligible for inclusion, studies had to meet certain criteria. For instance, all measurements had to be performed by a trained health professional (because we know men typically aren’t very honest or accurate when they measure themselves), all participants had to be age 17 or older, and the studies could not be based on samples of men who had complaints about their penis size or functioning. The studies came from a diverse set of countries including Nigeria, Korea, Turkey, India, and Egypt—in fact, only 3 of the samples came from North America. So what did they find?Read More
I have been a sex educator for nearly a decade and, during that time, I’ve been asked a lot of questions about a lot of different things; however, year after year, I can’t help but notice that certain topics come up much more frequently than others. In light of this, I thought I would start putting together some definitive resource guides for the most commonly asked questions on these topics. Let’s start with penis size. Here are the five most common questions I tend to receive on this topic. Each question has a short answer, along with a link to a longer answer.Read More
The penis is a fascinating piece of human anatomy; however, most of us know surprisingly little about it. So, I decided to compile a list of ten of the most interesting facts about the penis. Do you have other favorite penis facts? Feel free to add them in the comments section below.
1. Men usually get 4-5 erections per night, but it's not because they constantly dream about sex--rather, this is simply a natural occurrence as guys enter and exit different sleep cycles. This is why so men wake up with “morning wood.”Read More
