Sexual fantasy is one of the most, well, "fascinating" topics in human sexuality, which is why I am currently running an online survey of sexual fantasies that is designed to be the largest and most comprehensive investigation in this area to date. This study will help us to better understand what it is that people are fantasizing about, how sexual fantasies vary across different segments of the population, as well as what our fantasies mean and where they come from.Read More
Sexual fantasy is one of the most interesting topics there is in the field of human sexuality. Below is a selection of fascinating facts that have emerged from the research compiled thus far. If you would like to contribute to our scientific knowledge of sexual fantasies, click here to participate in a new study that is designed to be the largest and most comprehensive look at sexual fantasies to date.
1.) Research has found some pretty reliable gender differences in the content of men’s and women’s sexual fantasies, such as men’s greater tendency to have fantasies featuring explicit sexual content and multiple partners. However, fantasies do not appear to differ based upon sexual orientation—aside from the sex of the person they’re fantasizing about, gays and lesbians have fantasies that are pretty similar in content to their heterosexual counterparts. Research has found that sexual fantasies are common for people of all genders and sexual orientations. However, there is a lot of variability in what people fantasize about. As some evidence of this, let’s look at a sampling of sexual fantasies submitted by readers of The Psychology of Human Sexuality. If you would like to submit your fantasy for potential inclusion in a future Top 10 List, check out the Reader Survey tab at the top of this page where you can report your information anonymously and participate in a brief sex survey. Thanks to all who submitted for this edition!Read More
A few weeks back, I posted an article about how men’s and women’s sexual fantasies differ. As I mentioned in that piece, women’s fantasies typically contain a fair amount of emotional and romantic content. In addition, their fantasies usually aren’t as sexually explicit as men’s and are less likely to feature multiple partners. To explore women’s fantasies in a bit more detail, I have prepared a Top Ten List of Sexual Fantasies that women have anonymously submitted to me over the years. You’ll notice that a number of the fantasies do include romantic imagery. However, you’ll also find that women sometimes fantasize about the same things as men, with occasional mentions of sexy celebrities, masked superheroes, and threesomes. Enjoy!Read More
I recently posted an article about how men’s and women’s sexual fantasies differ. As I mentioned in that piece, men’s fantasies tend to be sexually explicit, frequently include multiple partners, and often express themes of dominance and submission. To demonstrate some evidence of this and explore men’s fantasy content in a little more detail, I have prepared a Top Ten List of sexual fantasies than guys have anonymously submitted to me over the years. As you’ll see when reading this list, threesomes are (not surprisingly) perhaps the most commonly desired scenario. However, you’ll also notice that men’s fantasies frequently include trying new things, breaking social taboos, and combining sex with their true loves: football, food, and Star Wars. Enjoy!Read More
In lieu of answering sex questions this Friday, I’m posting a Top 10 list of sexual fantasies that people have anonymously submitted to me over the years. It’s sort of like my own version of Post Secret, except that people only tell me their sex fantasies. The fantasies below are not necessarily the most common ones I’ve received—they’re just fantasies I found interesting and decided to share. As you read them, try and guess whether they were written by men or by women. The answers are included at the end of the post so that you can test your “sexpertise.” As you’ll see, sometimes it's pretty easy, but it's not always as obvious as it seems. In the coming weeks, I’ll post an article about scientific research on sex fantasies to help you better understand gender differences in fantasy content, as well as why we fantasize in the first place. Until then, enjoy!Read More
