Fighting Inequality and Injustice: Actions Speak Louder Than Words

June 5, 2020 by Justin Lehmiller

Events over the last several weeks have got me thinking more about what I can do to make a difference when it comes to fighting against entrenched forms of inequality and injustice. Social media and blog posts aren’t enough—actions really speak louder than words. Real and meaningful social change won’t happen unless we take action.

As a starting point, I have made a series of donations this week (including some monthly recurring donations) to several organizations that work each day to reduce racial inequality and to stand up for the rights of marginalized persons and groups.

Something else I’ve decided to do is to make a greater effort to use my Sex and Psychology platform to help amplify the voices of persons of color (POC) in my field through the form of guest posts, Q&As, and research spotlights. One of the many goals of Sex and Psychology has always been to shine a spotlight on various forms of diversity, with multiple posts to date covering issues relating to race, ethnicity, age, disability, gender, sexual orientation, consensual non-monogamy, kink/BDSM, and more.

However, I can and will do more in the weeks, months, and years ahead.

POC colleagues who are interested in becoming guest bloggers, fill out the form on this page to learn more about paid writing opportunities to contribute to the site, highlight your work, and educate the public about the science of sex. Authors have the option of direct payments to themselves, or to have donations made to the charity of their choice instead. Message me if you have questions or want to learn more.

Also, if you want to support POC in the field, here’s a list of 50+ Black sex educators, researchers, and therapists worth following on Instagram. Have more suggestions for people to follow? Mention them in the comments section below.

Again, this is just a starting point. There’s more to do—much, much more. Let’s work together, take action, and pave the way for change!
