A Top 10 List of Awesomely Bad Pick-Up Lines

Over the past few years, I have asked students in my Human Sexuality course to tell me some of the most interesting pick-up lines they’ve ever heard. I have compiled a list of ten of the most awesomely bad ones below. I’m presenting these as a lesson in what you should NOT do when meeting someone for the first time, because research indicates that most men and women prefer direct (e.g., “Hi. I like you.”) and harmless introductions (e.g., “Have you seen any good movies lately?”) to cutesy, flippant, and crude pick-up lines.1 Trust me (and science)--you'll have a far better chance of finding love by being nice and showing that you have good personal qualities.2
10. “I’m in a frat. Wanna do it?”
9. “Hey baby, why don’t you can I get together and make a covalent bond?” [Editor’s Note: Can you tell I worked at a big engineering school at some point?]
8. “I lost my phone number. Can I have yours?”
7. “Hey. I’m in this sex class right now and I could really use the practice to help me study.”
6. “Do you know what would look good on you? Me.”
5. “Do you work for UPS? I could swear I saw you checking out my package.”
4. “You can be my Burger King and I’ll be your Dairy Queen—You treat me right, and you can have it your way.”
3. “You’re not the best looking, but beauty is only a light switch away.”
2. “Do you believe in love at first sight, or should I walk by again?”
1. “Is there a keg in your pants? ‘Cause I would love to tap that!”
